You have made the decision to begin blogging, have chosen WordPress as your blogging platform. You have chosen a domain name, intstalled WordPress on your hosting account. You have chosen a theme and of course know which niche your blog will be about. Now what to do to make it a more friendly as well as professional site.

Install some plugins. Using plugins in WordPress is going to make your site more professional. Plugins will also help your site be found by the search engines.

Many plugins are available. Some are standard or “needed.” Others are the preference of individuals.

The needed plugins are Askimet, All In One SEO Pack, and Google XML Sitemap. Others that will help your site are Contact Form, Ping Optimizer, Adsense Ads, Privacy Policy, and so many more.

The question becomes, how do I install these plugins? That is very simple.

Begin by signing in to your admin or Dashboard. On the left you will see an option to click for Plugins. Once you click that, all of your plugins will be visible. Now you can click the “add new” and a screen will come up for you to search for a plugin.

If you know the exact name of the plugin you are searching, you can type that into the search box and WordPress will find it for you. If it is a WordPress plugin, it will be found immediately. You may also find some additional choices. For example, if your type in Privacy Policy, you may find several options. Pick the one you want and then click on “Install” on the right side of the page.

WordPress will automatically install this plugin on your blog. You are then given the option of activating that plugin or returning to the install page again. See how easy that is?

Other pluging are also available. These are created by others outside of WordPress. Sometimes there is a charge for these – sometimes not. If you are looking for some particular addition to your blog, you can Google what you are looking for. Once you find it, you download it to your computer – saving it on the desktop is the simplest. Keep it in the Zip format. Then, when you are on the add new page for the plugins, simply click the “upload” button at the top, then browse, find your file and finish with “Install Now.”

All newly installed plugins need to be activated, so be sure to do that. All you need do is click “activate” and it is done for you. Most plugins just begin working but some will need to have settings adjusted. This will be visible under the plugin on the plugin page. However, for some you will have to look under “settings” or “tools” in order to be able to set them up before they are activated.

Plugins make a huge difference in your site. They make you site safe from spam, create a searchable environment for the search engines, and give a very professional look to your WordPress blog. The best part of all? You can do it yourself!

I started using WordPress as an affiliate marketing platform about a year ago. I’ve had great results! WordPress’ blogging software is very easy to install and use. Also Google loves it!

There are two WordPress sites. WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

WordPress.com is a free blogging site like Blogger, Weebly, or any of a host of others. With the .com site, you don’t have to have your own web hosting. The big problem with WordPress.com is you can’t really monetize it, and you can’t modify the look and feel of it very much. So, if you’re interested in affiliate marketing, WordPress.com is not what you want. You want WordPress.org.

Wordpress.com and WordPress.org are run by the same company. WordPress.org, however, is open source blogging software you download to your own site on your own host. Now, before you freak out, if you’re a technophobe, I’ve got two things to say about this downloading business:

it’s really not hard to do. I don’t particularly like the technical aspect of internet marketing, yet I can do it. if you’re using a good web host, they can probably do it for you. Some charge a nominal fee, other’s don’t.

Either way, once you get the software downloaded to your own domain, you’re ready to go.

Your WordPress blog will look like any other generic blog. It will have menus for recent posts, categories, that sort of thing. For the purposes of affiliate marketing, you don’t need all of this. A lot of it can be deleted. Let’s talk about what you need to modify to make a decent affiliate marketing site. You can put your product descriptions where you post. Let the categories be the product lines.

For instance, if you were selling coffee makers, one category might be Krupps, the other Black and Decker.

WordPress has a “page” feature. You can make static pages that show up in your navigation bar. I use those to list all of the products from a certain line.

I also sometimes use the “Recent Posts” feature, although I don’t show the date of the post. I’ve set up a number of these small affiliate sites using WordPress as a platform. I’ll set them up, do a little search engine optimization on them, then leave them alone and let them run. They’re kind of like having several ATM machines that spit out money each month–except this money doesn’t come out of my bank account!

The way I advocate you do internet marketing is to do your research and choose a good niche, then use one of the many Web 2.0 sites, like Squidoo or Hubpages, to actually test your idea. Only when I find out a new niche has traffic and this traffic actually buys stuff do I move on to making my own site on my own domain.

If I’m selling a limited number of things, then WordPress has turned out to be an easy to use and very successful way to create a website.

Google is predisposed to love blogs, too! So, getting traffic to a WordPress blog should be easier than to your own static site.

bridal shower favors

For some years now, Internet marketing gurus have been preaching that static websites are a thing of the past and everyone hoping to profit from free search engine traffic should build their websites using a WordPress blog.

I hate to let the cat out of the bag, and if you want to build any websites in my markets I hope you ignore this article, but in my opinion this is not true.

First of all, if Google loves blogs just because they’re blogs, you’d think they’d give first priority to Blogger blogs, because they own Blogger. But they don’t.

Granted, WordPress is a lot niftier than Blogger. It has an enormous range of plugins and themes. No serious blogger should use anything except WordPress. But there’s no intrinsic reason why a WordPress blog should automatically be preferred by Google for its search rankings.

At this point, WordPress advocates point out that WordPress has plugins to optimize your blog for the search engines. The most well-known one allows you to adjust your post names, and modify the title tag and put in the keyword and description meta tag.

Fine — but you do that with a static web page. In fact, planning your directory structure and names pages and so on is a heck of a lot easier than customizing the All in One SEO plugin.

Yes, there’s a Google sitemap plugin. But you can do that for your website automatically with online software.

Personally, I think that what Google loves is WordPress blogs that stay on one theme or topic. If you love cats and so every day you blog about cats and information about cats and nothing else but cats, then Google can analyse your blog and see that it’s about cats. You’ll rank well for cat keywords because you stick to that subject, not because you’re using WordPress.

However, if you write about your pet cat today, and tomorrow about a movie you watched and next week about your girlfriend breaking up with you… then Google sees that your blog is not focused on anything and you won’t rank for anything despite being a WordPress blog.

Most websites aren’t so personal, but most are not organized well, and that’s why they don’t do as well as they could. For example, my website on computer careers contains a lot of pages on various computer subjects and technologies, but I didn’t organize the directories. I piled articles on programming languages on top of operating systems on top of hardware on top of database terms. When one directory had about 100 pages, I started another one.

The one advantage WordPress has is the ability of visitors to interact with your site and leave comments. If that is important to your business model, then you need a blog.

But if you just want to put up a small site on a tightly defined subject so you can make money, static sites are easier and, I believe, just as effective. You’ll rank as well as your onpage optimization and off page links.
About the Author: wedding cameras

For a web developer and designer Joomla is a great platform to deploy content managed and interactive web sites, as well as the standard business web site. With templates and template creators it makes a fast, efficient high quality publishing platform in a highly competitive industry. But security can be an issue for those unaware of the problems.

With my first use of Joomla I installed the files but as I wasn’t sure I was going to stay using it I took the quick and easy route of setting user names and passwords to one of the usual defaults that we all use. A big mistake! After a couple of months I suddenly found my business web site being reported as dangerous in Google Chrome, with various medical ‘products’ being shown in the search results. Then a colleague informed me that Avast had reported viruses when he browsed the web site.

On checking the site I found code inserted into template files, and a whole new directory containing virus filled folders and links to a range of dubious product sellers. To repair it I had to delete the whole site and reinstall using a database backup.

Since then I’ve learnt a lot about Joomla security and all my sites are no fully secure. The following will help you avoid the basic mistakes:

1. Make sure to set strong passwords on the admin log in and database right from the start.

2. Avoid setting any file or directory permissions to 777 (r/w/x) – that’s writable to everyone. Keep folders as 755, files as 644 and config files as 666. If you don’t understand file permissions search for some information and learn.

3. Change the default database table name from jos_ to something else at the time of install.

4. Only use the minimum of extensions. For the ones you do use search online to check that they don’t have any security issues.

5. If you don’t want to use an extension that you’ve tried out make sure to remove it rather than just set it inactive. This way all the files will be deleted from the server. You can easily reinstall extensions when needed.

6. Check and apply upgrades and patches as they appear, especially if they include security updates.

7. Check the site regularly for any unauthorised changes. Use info:domain in Google to see the results of indexing.

8. As a last point make sure you backup the database, templates, images and other media, and anything else that has been uploaded to the site or customized. Your web host may provide a facility to backup the MySQL database, but if not then learn to use phpMyAdmin, it should be provided by the web host.

Joomla is a great piece of software and most issues of security are down to server config and user error. You can remove both issues by taking a little time to understand how to maintain a secure Joomla site.
About the Author: sustainable living
