In the last article we began looking at Joomla and, more specifically, the handy “Beginner’s Guide to Joomla” that the makers of this content management system provides at their web site. Hopefully by this time you have taken the time to sit down and really ask yourself what you want out of your own web site, as this is always the first step. Without this foundation, your web site may become a scattered assortment of pages that have no rhyme or reason.

Per the “Beginners Guide to Joomla” recommendations, an extremely helpful thing to do after you have figured out what you want out of your web site is to check out the Joomla v1.5 Quick Start Guide. Much time was spent in creating this helpful 49 page guide, and it is full of guidance, screenshots, and everything you need to get started. Once you install the program, the guide then teaches you how to configure extensions and work with components, modules, and plugins. The guide is an asset to beginning your web site, especially if you have never used Joomla’s system before.

For each component that you wish to configure, there will be both an administrator side of it and a site element. As the Joomla site states, “Components are the major portion of your page because a component is driven by a menu item and every menu item runs a component.” Next, you have your modules. The login component of your web site is a module, as well as the footer. Modules can be integrated into the components of your site, or they can stand alone. Plugins handle the events on your site. “When an event is triggered, plugins that are registered with the application to handle that event execute.”

Site administration is a crucial component to understand, as you will need it when you find it necessary to backup and restore your database. You just never know when these instances will arise, so it is best to know how to handle them prior to even getting your web site going.

One tip that Joomla cautions against is adding anything and everything to your site at the onset of starting out just because it “looks cool.” Here is what Joomla specifically says about this: “It’s best to maximize the use of the core code before you add extensions to your site. With each extension that you install, you complicate your site administration requirements and slow your site down. Upgrades are also more complicated. Extensions are great but make certain you really need them, first.”

This is an important tip because you really do not want to complicate your web site from the beginning. This undue frustration can be eliminated simply by taking some precautions and determining what it is you really need. The extensions are there for you to utilize. However, just like every web site is different, what you will actually need for yours will be different, too. Keep this in mind as you move ahead.

These tips, and many others, can be found at Joomla’s web site. Countless guides are available so you do not have to go through setting up your web site blindly. Simply taking some extra time to learn a bit about this content management program will save you time in the end.
baptism favors

Well Microsoft has finally made a tool that makes building your own website quite easy, in fact, so easy that anyone can do it. The program is called Expression Web and on the CD that comes with the program is a nice tutorial (it’s very good) and the program itself has all sorts of help features. But sometimes it is not so easy to read the help menu, while configuring pages on your website.

Therefore it makes sense to get a good Step-by-Step guide to help you. Now then, Microsoft thought of that and the program comes with a small flip chart that you can use until you become proficient with the program. Still, I myself like to have a book near bye with everything I need to know, while working. So, I recommend that you go buy:

“Step-By-Step Microsoft Expression Web” – Build exactly the skills you need and Learn at the Pace you want” by Chris Leeds and Microsoft Corporation and Publishing. 2008.

Now then, this is a brand new book on the shelves as of this last month. It is excellent and addresses all the changes to the program and it also includes a CD ROM in the back with skill building practice files, so you can practice and play around with your websites without changing them. And the entire book is backed up in a complete eBook on the CD ROM.

This book is great for the beginner like me or the advanced web designer like my web guy guru. Luckily, I was able to save 10% with my Barnes and Noble book discount card and it was on sale too! Maybe you might get lucky too, but either way it is a great book and you can read it at your own speed and flip thru the chapters to find whatever you need, whenever you need it. I highly recommend this book.

travelocity coupons

About the book

The Google story describes, as expected the Googles 10 year history. How did Google become a verb? How did Google become the most important and influential company on the Internet? How did two Stanford students create one of the world’s most recognizable brands in just a few short years?

This book profiles both the company and its founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin The book is filled with inside glimpses into the history of Google and the challenges is faced on its way to success, It gives an insight to its unique corporate atmosphere and vision. It is a great book for anyone who wants to understand just how this unconventional company has become so successful in such a short time.

About the authors

David A. Vise is a senior advisor to New Mountain Capital, a leading New York-based private equity firm, and to New Mountain Vantage, the firm’s public equity fund..

Mark Malseed is an investigative journalist and information industry consultant. Following the release of The Google Story, his first book he shares his investigative insights with businesses, organizations and schools in “Google Sleuthing” seminars.

What to learn from this book?

If you are interested in the history of the Internet the story of Google is a must read.

It is fun to read. One of the things I learned from reading this book is that Pagerank is not just about the ranking of your webpage but the algorithm that is given the name by its developer Larry Page. It learns you about the companies mantra: “Don’t be evil”.

The book can also be used as an inspiration if you are setting up your own business and how you can become successful too.

never say never

Running QuickBooks in Nonprofits, by Kathy Ivens, is a must-have guide for anybody taking care of bookkeeping chores in a nonprofit environment using QuickBooks.

The author does an outstanding job organizing the material and making it easy to understand. The guide contains many topics that will be familiar to experienced QuickBooks users, such as Entering Bills, Making Bank Deposits, and Writing Checks. The author does an excellent job presenting these mundane topics as they apply to nonprofits, often covering them quite deeply. The Entering Bills section, for example, is almost 11 pages long, a few of the many subtopics being: Posting to Multiple Expense Accounts, Allocating to Multiple Programs, and Allocating to Grants and Contracts.

The guide also covers unique topics that pertain to nonprofits. Allocating payroll across multiple grants or programs, managing volunteers, and preparing for an audit, are just a few of the difficult subjects found in this guide.

The range of topics covered by this 498 page volume is impressive, and includes the following:

1. QuickBooks Limitations for Nonprofits

2. Getting Started

3. Chart of Accounts

4. Configuring Preferences

5. Configuring Classes and Lists

6. Managing Revenue

7. Managing Expenses

8. Managing Bank Accounts and Cash

9. Budgets and Projections

10. Producing Reports

11. Year End Activities

12. Audits

13. Managing QuickBooks Files

14. Managing Users and Security

15. QuickBooks Fundraising Tools

16. In-Kind (Non-Cash) Revenue

Appendix: Nonprofit Accounting Issues

Running QuickBooks in Nonprofits opens with a discussion of the limitations of QuickBooks for the nonprofit environment. The author’s reminder that QuickBooks was not designed for nonprofits, but rather reworked for them, helps readers understand why there is a need for workarounds and other tips and tricks. These workarounds, tips, and tricks are more fully discussed in other parts of the book.

The 18 page index is well populated and will serve as an effective research tool when important information is needed.

Anybody who has even dabbled in bookkeeping for nonprofits knows that it can be an extremely complicated task. This guide will serve as a valuable reference for years to come, helping nonprofit organizations keep their books accurate and well-organized. Well worth the retail price of $34.95.

Running QuickBooks in Nonprofits is published by CPA911 Publishing.

manage resource box links

How To Do Everything With Web 2.0 Mashups By Jesse Feiler
McGraw Hill 2008
$29.99

This book grows on you. I originally purchased it to find out something about mashups. I’d come across the term before and hadn’t been satisfied with the explanations I’d found. This book at once did an admirable job of that; I’m satisfied I now know a mashup when I see one.

What put me off about the book was its almost mechanical approach. Written in terse, no-nonsense unemotional prose, it had none of the humorous dry quips I’d come to appreciate in other Internet-related books. It drove from point to point as if building a house rather than a concept. Liberal arts major that I am, I guess I’m uncomfortable with that. Of course it’s possible others, more technically inclined than I, might enjoy the book precisely because of this approach.

The book’s first chapter is titled “Welcome to the World of Mashups” and that’s the last bit of gratuitous amicability you’ll find. After that it’s, bang! “Understanding the Mashup World;” and bang! “Use XML to Structure Data;” and bang! “Use JavaScript to Script the Mashup Page,” and so forth until your head spins. I set the book aside.

I picked it up again a month or so later when I suddenly discovered that it had done an excellent job of acquainting me with the central mysteries of mashups. I finally recognized them for what they were when I came across them, and found the book had given me the ability to actually understand how they did what they were doing. I wasn’t quite ready to start building my own mashups, but I did enjoy the feeling that I’d learned something interesting and wanted to learn more-I guess that might be even more important than the humor I found in some lesser books.

Instead of struggling against it I found myself appreciating the way the book broke mashups down into their component parts and put them back together. Anyone who has struggled with JavaScript, RSS, XML, Php and API’s as separate unrelated entities will get a sudden flash of understanding from each seeing them now working as parts of a larger whole. Still, I wish the author put a bit more of himself into the prose.

For those who cannot get through the day without using Google to search out an item on the Internet, Google Speaks is an enlightening book to read. The story of Sergey Brin, a young Russian immigrant, and Larry Page, described as a typical American boy in most ways, this book is, also, the story of the founding of Google, a company designated by Time magazine in 2006 as the smartest company of the year.

Author Janet Lowe brings out some revealing facts about the young entrepreneurs, including the information that both Sergey and Larry attended Montessori elementary schools. The educational methods of Maria Montessori seemed to have shaped both Sergey and Larry, Lowe writes. The two gifted young men later met as Stanford graduate students, and what began as a college research project developed into an amazing company.

Lowe’s book details the growth of Google and tells about many of the people involved in the company’s phenomenal developement. It also tells how the name Google came to be. Larry and Sergey intended to name the company googol which is the mathematical term for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. However, someone misspelled the word as Google which Lowe terms a blessed blunder.

Among the many unique projects described in the book, is a collaboration between Google and NASA to provide high-resolution lunar imagery and maps to the Google Moon program. The book also tells about a copyright infringement dispute with the Authors Guild and others when Google began scanning and copying millions of books in library collections.

The Timeline and Glossary sections in the back provide excellent references for the reader. Google Speaks is a wealth of information. It is a book that everyone who enjoys using the Internet should read.

Maverick Money Makers is the latest internet marketing manual to hit entrepreneurs’ shelves. This industry is booming and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon lead by promises of easy wealth. However most everyday working people simply want to know if the techniques taught in this and other money making courses work.

What you need to understand is that these are nothing more than skills; they alone cannot make you money. I want to explain what is included in Maverick Money Makers and then show you some ideas and methods of how to make money with that information.

The main point of this manual is to teach people affiliate marketing, a system for making money through the promotion and sales of products. What makes affiliate marketing stand out as a great business opportunity is very simple, incredibly low overhead.

Unlike starting an offline business on the internet and with affiliate marketing the costs are laughable when compared to rent, utilities, products, and storage fees required for a real business. You can build a website for less than several hundred dollars a year and you never need to pay for the storage or shipping of your products since your referrals are digitally credited to you and the company does the rest of the work.

This may seem too good to be true and you may feel that Maverick Money Makers is pulling a fast one on you. The truth is that this industry is booming and people really are making millions. The trick is through traffic generation one of the many strategies taught in the Maverick Money Makers manual.

These companies that are doing business online do not care if they are splitting commissions with their affiliates as long as they are receiving the traffic being sent to them. They only pay you when they get paid so it is worth it for them to use affiliates to attract more sales. In the end they and the affiliate pull a nice profit from the transactions.

Inside Maverick Money Makers you will find many tutorials on how to achieve this goal of driving traffic to promotional offers. You can do this by buying pay per click advertising spots on the major search engines which is a method that needs to be carefully monitored and tracked.

The good thing is that there are tools that will tell you exactly how much you are earning per cent you invest. This really is accurate and you can keep profits high by eliminating unprofitable campaigns and increasing on the keywords which are converting really well into your chosen offer.

The other methods taught in Maverick Money Makers require no investment but you will need to setup a simple web page. Once you have that website you will work on free methods to drive traffic and get your website to rank for important keywords. This method is preferable as it ensures a long term income at an investment of only hard work.

Overall Maverick Money Makers is a great course in teaching the basic methods of internet marketing and if you master them you will be guaranteed a solid income.

It covers a few important areas that most of the other books miss out.

It is a no fluff, straight to the point ebook and is well written in an easy to understand language that doesn’t leave you confused about what you need to do.

Here is the Table Of Contents for The Path To Ebay Riches so you can see exactly what this ebook covers:

* Do you want to be an Ebay success story

* How to start without investment cash

* Now that you have a little cash

* Wholesalers and dropshipping

* Your Ebay listing

* Increasing your feedback

* Information products

* Listing your ebooks

* Automatic ebooks delivery with Outlook Express

* What price do you start your auctions at

* Types of Ebay listings

* Ebay security check

So as you can see this ebook really does cover a wide range of topics and by following the information in this ebook you can easily make a good income as an Ebay seller. Here is just one of the testimonials for this ebook:

The Path To Ebay Riches is an excellent guide for newcomers wanting to get their share of the Ebay pie. This is a step by step guide of how to get started in the multi-billion dollar business of making a living on Ebay.
Included are several “Bonus”
resources to help you get started. Corey shares everything that took him a few years to learn and that gives his readers a huge head start by knowing this information up front instead of taking a few years of trial and error themselves to learn it.

You can view the website here

godaddy coupon code

As we look at companies like Google, we are reminded by the incredible power of the Internet. Still, what do we learn from this to help our own individual companies grow? Why is it that Google does so well, and how can we use this information to increase our profits? If you’ve ever had that question, I have an incredible book that I believe you should read. The name of the book is;

“What Would Google Do?” By Jeff Jaruis, Collins press publishing, a division of Harper Press Inc., New York, New York, 2009, ISBN: 978-0-06-170971-5.

Wow, this book has an incredible amount of Google history, and if you were ever wondering how Google came from out of the blue, and passed all the other search engines such a Yahoo, this will explain it all. After you read this you will realize that they didn’t come out of the blue it all and they were able to earn the Internet surfers respect by keeping it simple and giving them exactly what they wanted.

You will learn about their rocket ship of success, and some of the mistakes they made along the way too. This is a good book which explains search engine philosophy, and it takes us behind the minds of the currently largest and most well-known search engine in the world. The author then uses the Google model as a guide to explain to other companies, and even small businesses how they can create a user centric future concept to better their companies, and continually innovate.

There were many great quotes in the book, and they are also chapter titles, quotes that will make you think, and take a good hard look at your current company and business. For instance;

“The Worst Customer Is Your Best Friend”

In other words, customer complaints can help you better your service and products if you will listen.

“Do What You Do Best and Link to the Rest”

In other words, stick to your core business, and help other businesses get what they want, and watch both of you grow.

“If You Are Not Searchable, You Will Not Be Found”

In other words, in the new paradigm of the information age, you must have a strong online presence, or you don’t exist in the minds of the consumers, customers, and clients. If they can’t find you online, you aren’t real. Indeed, I know many people who actually believe that and it is a common perception, and therefore, it is a reality in the marketplace. In any case this book was totally excellent, and I highly recommend it to.
About the Author: cheap wedding favors
