It depends on what your site wants to accomplish.
Joomla is best if you intend to have multiple users contributing a lot of different types of content — for example, if you are going to have a store, and a calendar, and a membership directory, and several people are going to contribute articles to your site, then Joomla is the way to go.
If you, or only a few people, are primarily going to post articles, video and pictures on your site, then WordPress is far easier to use than Joomla.

It deepends on your requirement. Apart from Joomla or Wordpress you can also use Drupal or Xoops all this CMS comes with Ecommerce module. Like, Joomla comes with Virtuemart and Drupal comes with UberCart. I would suggest not to use Wordpress for a ecommerce website, its being mainly used for Blog or artcles creation.
If you are talking about building a Dynamic Ecommerce website then there are few shopping cart open source application available like OScommerce or Magento or ZenCart with a robust backend content managemnet system.
You can get ready made well designed templates for all the above mentioned open source application from templatemonster.com website with a cost.
